Spanish and international health authorities are coordinating the evacuation of 17 American citizens from the cruise ship MV Hondius, anchored off the Port of Granadilla in Tenerife, after an outbreak of Andes hantavirus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed the group will be flown by charter to an Air Force base in Nebraska and taken to the National Quarantine Center in Omaha for several weeks of monitoring. The ship, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, has reported at least three deaths and eight infections among 147 people. The outbreak is believed to have begun during a shore excursion in South America.
