Ex-Utah Players Accuse Program of Mishandling Injuries

Six former University of Utah football players have publicly accused the athletic program and coaching staff of mishandling serious injuries between 2020 and 2024. The allegations, initially published by The Salt Lake Tribune, detail instances of delayed medical diagnoses, inadequate imaging, and intense pressure from coaches to play through debilitating physical damage under threat of roster dismissal or scholarship loss. Edge rusher Van Fillinger claimed he was forced to play a full season on a severely damaged ankle after being threatened with removal from the team. Wide receiver Mycah Pittman stated he lacked timely advanced imaging for an ankle injury later identified as a partially torn Achilles. Additional players reported similar conflicts between medical staff recommendations and coaching demands for rapid returns. Utah Athletics and University of Utah Health issued a joint defense emphasizing adherence to safety protocols, while former head coach Kyle Whittingham denied direct involvement in medical decisions.
