Washington, D.C. authorities issued a Code Purple “Very Unhealthy” air quality alert on Sunday morning following President Donald Trump’s large Independence Day fireworks display over the National Mall. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and the District Department of the Environment warned that Air Quality Index levels between 201 and 300 meant serious potential health effects for all residents and advised people to stay indoors and avoid strenuous outdoor activity. Meteorologist Matthew Cappucci reported hazardous PM2.5 concentrations. Prior National Park Service estimates, cited by the Washington Post, projected 600–1,200 micrograms per cubic meter, with a worst-case scenario of about 2,000.

Code Purple means the air is very unhealthy. It can cause serious health problems, especially for kids, older adults, and people with lung diseases. If you're in D.C., stay indoors and avoid heavy outdoor activities.
Fireworks can create a lot of air pollution. This time, it was bad enough for a Code Purple alert. Check your local air quality index before planning outdoor activities. Worth forwarding if you know someone in D.C.
