Wildlife photographer Bret Saalwaechter captured a tense, comic scene in Tanzania’s Serengeti: hungry lion cubs hounding heat-weary mothers during the dry season. His image, I Just Can’t Wait to Be King, reached the final round of this year’s Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards. Other selected finalists include a gannet smacked by grass at Bempton Cliffs, frogs hitching a boost in Western Australia, a grinning brown bear cub, territorial guillemots in Norway, a high-kicking young gorilla in Rwanda, a head-tucked flamingo on a Caribbean beach, and a finger-licking crowned sifaka in Madagascar.

Four years after her first ovarian cancer diagnosis, CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour says her latest recurrence is being well managed. Returning after a month off air, she disclosed the cancer’s “fairly rare” form and urged women to listen to their bodies and seek care. On the Changing the Ovarian Cancer Story podcast, she described recent surgery, recovery, and the start of chemotherapy. Joined by gynecology oncology consultant Dr. Angela George, Amanpour said the current case is stage “1/2,” with disease adhering to her pelvis, and noted pain symptoms helped prompt swift treatment.

French investigators recovered more than 150 DNA, fingerprint and other traces after a brazen daylight robbery at the Louvre, prosecutor Laure Beccuau said. Hooded thieves climbed an extendable ladder to the Apollo Gallery and escaped with eight jewels once owned by French queens and empresses, worth about €88 million ($102 million). Footage shows internal alarms triggering at 9:34 a.m. and staff briefly confronting the burglars before retreating. The museum’s director admitted an exterior CCTV blind spot and pledged upgrades, while detectives track the suspects using public and private cameras in Paris and surrounding regions.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum finalized plans to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge’s 1.5 million-acre coastal plain to potential oil and gas drilling, restoring previously canceled leases and clearing the way for future sales promised by President Donald Trump. The move, welcomed by Alaska leaders and Kaktovik’s Iñupiat corporation but opposed by Gwich’in communities and conservation groups, follows a judge’s ruling that the Biden administration lacked authority to void leases. Burgum also completed a land exchange to build a road through Izembek Refuge, a project backed as a life-and-safety issue and headed for fresh court challenges.

With a federal shutdown dragging on, SNAP benefits for nearly 42 million Americans could stop Nov. 1, putting families like Shari Jablonowski’s in crisis. The USDA says payments are on hold “until further notice,” blaming Senate Democrats; advocates counter the agency can tap reserves and may be obliged to keep funds flowing. WIC money is also running low. New work requirements start the same day. Mayors and states are scrambling—from emergency declarations to bolstering food banks—but charity can’t replace billions. Jablonowski, already skipping utility payments, fears losing heat and says the cutoff would ruin Thanksgiving.

As the Vikings prepare to face the Lions in nine days, the article argues it’s time to start J.J. McCarthy. His high ankle sprain was pegged at 4–6 weeks; Week 9 lands seven weeks after the injury, and he has already been the emergency quarterback for two games. With past injuries raising durability questions and a roster not as strong as in 2024, the piece says Minnesota must evaluate him now—playoffs are possible, but this isn’t a Super Bowl team. The message: sink or swim, gather data for 2026, and stop delaying the decision.

Judge acquits Soldier F in the Bloody Sunday case, even as he condemned the Parachute Regiment’s conduct, saying troops lost discipline and shot unarmed civilians in the back with intent to kill and without lawful self-defence. The prosecution relied on 1972 statements from Soldiers G and H, whom he called “serially untruthful,” leaving insufficient proof that Soldier F fired. Bereaved families felt partly vindicated; veterans welcomed the verdict. Political reactions were divisive, and the Westminster government signalled commitment to a way forward that acknowledges the past while supporting those who served, as Parliament considers new investigative legislation.

World leaders convene for back-to-back summits in Malaysia and South Korea, with attention fixed on US President Donald Trump’s planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping—their first since Trump won a second term. Bloomberg reporters will host a live discussion on what’s at stake for the US and Asia on Oct. 24 at 10:30am HKT. Bloomberg digital subscribers and Terminal clients have exclusive access to sign in and submit questions during the broadcast, and a recording will be available to listen and share.

A federal judge in Chicago extended a restraining order indefinitely, pausing any National Guard deployment unless the U.S. Supreme Court steps in, as the administration seeks an emergency reversal. In Portland, a split 9th Circuit ruling let Trump assume command of Oregon Guard troops, but a separate order still blocks deployment, with a hearing Friday. A 9th Circuit panel is also weighing California cases over Los Angeles deployments and Posse Comitatus. In Washington, D.C., dueling suits challenge ongoing Guard presence, while Tennessee Democrats sue to halt patrols in Memphis.

Portugal stunned the U.S. women 2-1 in a Thursday night friendly in Chester, Pa., rallying for its first win over the Americans in 12 meetings. Rose Lavelle scored in the opening minute, but Diana Gomes headed a corner just before halftime—the first goal Portugal has ever scored against the USWNT—before Fátima Pinto’s deflected strike put the visitors ahead. The U.S., largely at full strength despite injuries including Trinity Rodman, suffered its first loss since April. U.S. Soccer honored retiree Alex Morgan pregame. The sides meet again Sunday.
