As dusk neared in Texas, Stephany Gauffeny cradled her newborn at the unmarked grave of her husband, Miguel García-Hernández, 31, who died on 29 September after being shot while shackled in a van outside ICE's Dallas field office. Authorities said the gunman targeted ICE officials, but only detainees were injured. García-Hernández had entered custody that morning after a DUI jail stay. Gauffeny, now facing bills and online hate, is weighing legal action. Mexico arranged humanitarian parole so his mother could travel to the US before he died.

Procter & Gamble beat Wall Street’s expectations for its fiscal first quarter, buoyed by strong beauty and grooming demand, and kept its full-year outlook despite tariff costs and what CEO Jon Moeller called a “challenging consumer and geopolitical environment.” For the quarter ended Sept. 30, adjusted EPS was $1.99 (vs. $1.90 expected) on revenue of $22.39 billion (vs. $22.18 billion). Net income rose to $4.75 billion. Overall sales grew 3% and organic sales 2%, while volume was flat: beauty volume +4%, grooming +1%, health care and fabric/home care −2%. Shares rose 3% premarket.

Astronomers report comet 3I/ATLAS has flipped from a rare sunward anti‑tail to a classic tail pointing away from the Sun, as confirmed by Nordic Optical Telescope data. Scientists attribute the shift to changing drivers: CO2 jets far out pushing dust sunward, then water‑ice sublimation nearer the Sun; NASA instruments estimate about 330 pounds per second of mass loss, mostly carbon dioxide. Debate simmers after Harvard’s Avi Loeb floated an artificial‑origin idea, which most researchers reject. With the comet behind the Sun, space telescopes carry monitoring until its expected reappearance in early November.

The Trump administration says boats destroyed in the Caribbean and Pacific were ferrying drugs, citing “incredible” intelligence, but has offered no specifics on the evidence or the nearly 40 people killed. Officials and briefings point to intercepted communications as the strongest basis, supplemented by imagery, yet experts warn such signals can be misread without corroboration. While U.S. collection on trafficking has expanded—largely via the military and NSA—gaps remain, including limited insight into some groups. The administration has not detailed who was on the boats beyond alleged smugglers.

Meeting participants of the Fifth World Meeting of Popular Movements on Thursday, Pope Leo XIV invoked Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum to denounce “new” injustices. He put the poor at the center, urging movements born on the peripheries to act with love and confront inequality, exclusion, and “bad management.” He cited the climate crisis, social media’s consumerist lure, addictive gambling platforms, a body-obsessed pharma culture, and harms tied to coltan and lithium extraction, and urged humane migration policies. He thanked popular movements, lamented weakened unions, and affirmed housing, work, and land as sacred rights: “I am with you.”

In Prince George's County, federal employees queued for food as a shutdown withheld pay from 1.4 million civilian workers—half furloughed, half still on the job. The Capital Area Food Bank’s initial 300 boxes ran out before reinforcements arrived, underscoring rising need and frayed mental health. With Friday paychecks halted, workers turned to loans, hardship withdrawals, and union relief funds that are quickly dwindling. While the Trump administration redirected money to pay some — from active-duty military to 70,000 DHS officers — many colleagues remain unpaid, a disparity the Bipartisan Policy Center says is beginning to ripple through local economies.

Senior Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino is accused of tossing tear gas into a crowd during a Chicago protest, a possible breach of US District Judge Sara Ellis’s order limiting federal crowd-control tactics. A new filing cites Facebook video showing him hurl an object toward demonstrators in Little Village; the clip lacks context on any warnings. Ellis has ordered Bovino deposed and set a Nov. 5 preliminary injunction hearing. The clashes follow Operation Midway Blitz, which has driven protests and more than 1,000 arrests. Illinois’ governor announced an accountability commission amid the outcry.

BBC Verify reports hundreds of Russian Africa Corps fighters have deployed in Mali after Wagner’s withdrawal, with French officials estimating 2,500 mercenaries and authenticated footage showing combat in Niono and recovered weapons and motorcycles. Separately, new satellite images show the White House East Wing has been completely demolished to make way for President Donald Trump’s planned $300m ballroom, slated to seat 650, with officials saying the rebuild will finish long before his term ends in January 2029. The live blog also flags investigations into Khartoum “ghost flights,” a Louvre robbery video, and a Ukraine allies meeting in London.

Europe’s backing of Ukraine gained new weight this week as President Trump sanctioned Russian oil giants Lukoil and Rosneft, while the E.U. unveiled new penalties and pledged two years of funding for Kyiv’s finances and defense. A plan to leverage frozen Russian assets for a €140 billion, interest‑free loan remains stalled by Belgian liability concerns, with revisions due by December. Brussels added 117 ‘shadow fleet’ tankers to its blacklist and moved toward a 2027 LNG import ban. Analysts warn the measures may not force a cease-fire, even as Trump floats a ‘peace board’ and signals sanctions could be lifted.

Wildlife photographer Bret Saalwaechter captured a tense, comic scene in Tanzania’s Serengeti: hungry lion cubs hounding heat-weary mothers during the dry season. His image, I Just Can’t Wait to Be King, reached the final round of this year’s Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards. Other selected finalists include a gannet smacked by grass at Bempton Cliffs, frogs hitching a boost in Western Australia, a grinning brown bear cub, territorial guillemots in Norway, a high-kicking young gorilla in Rwanda, a head-tucked flamingo on a Caribbean beach, and a finger-licking crowned sifaka in Madagascar.
