A federal judge in Texas will soon rule on competing plans that could strip Daca recipients in the state of their work permits, escalating years of legal uncertainty. Judge Andrew Hanen is weighing a Trump administration proposal to revoke Texas work authorizations while reopening Daca elsewhere, along with a push by Republican-led states to phase out the program entirely. With 86,000 recipients in Texas, advocates warn of economic damage and personal upheaval; Houston salon owner Laura Alguera called the prospect “heartbreaking.” Texas has also halted commercial driver’s licenses for non-citizens and enforced English rules.

In New York’s Village Halloween Parade, the usual skeletons and superheroes mixed with edible imaginings as this year’s theme It’s a Potluck turned Sixth Avenue into a shared table. No. 20 Texas beat Vanderbilt 34-31, striking first with a 75-yard Arch Manning-to-Ryan Wingo score and an offense that cashed six of seven drives. Manning, limited in practice by concussion protocol, was sharp behind a standout line, while Texas’ front smothered Vanderbilt until the final 10 minutes. Then Diego Pavia led three late touchdown drives to cut a 34-10 gap to three. It’s Texas’ fourth straight win and second over an AP Top 25 opponent, pushing the 7-2 Longhorns squarely into the CFP conversation days before the first rankings.

Skywatchers can expect a slightly bigger, brighter moon Wednesday night, as November’s supermoon makes its closest pass of the year, coming to just under 222,000 miles from Earth. The full moon can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than the faintest of the year, NASA says. Tides may rise a bit, though the change is hard to notice, according to astronomer Lawrence Wasserman. No special gear is needed if skies are clear, but the size difference is subtle, said Shannon Schmoll. October’s supermoon has passed; December’s will be the last of the year.

The American Federation of Government Employees split from much of organized labor by endorsing a Republican funding bill, upping pressure on Democrats as the shutdown entered its 30th day. Major unions, including SEIU 32BJ, AFL-CIO, NEA, and United Steelworkers, backed Democrats’ push to address health care while funding the government, with SEIU urging Democrats to hold the line. Teamsters joined AFGE in calling for a clean continuing resolution. As the White House blamed Democrats and labor leaders faulted President Trump, Senate Democrats rejected the bill 13 times and the Senate recessed until next week.
