The American Federation of Government Employees split from much of organized labor by endorsing a Republican funding bill, upping pressure on Democrats as the shutdown entered its 30th day. Major unions, including SEIU 32BJ, AFL-CIO, NEA, and United Steelworkers, backed Democrats’ push to address health care while funding the government, with SEIU urging Democrats to hold the line. Teamsters joined AFGE in calling for a clean continuing resolution. As the White House blamed Democrats and labor leaders faulted President Trump, Senate Democrats rejected the bill 13 times and the Senate recessed until next week.
