Raid on gang in Rio de Janeiro leaves at least 64 people dead, including police officers

About 2,500 police and soldiers stormed Rio de Janeiro’s Complexo do Alemão and Penha favelas in a raid against the Red Command, arresting 81 people amid shootouts that left at least 60 suspects and four officers dead, officials said. Helicopters, armored vehicles and alleged gang drones filled the sky; residents ducked for cover as fire and smoke rose. Authorities seized 93 rifles and over half a ton of drugs. The UN and rights groups demanded investigations. Schools shut, buses were commandeered, and traffic stalled, while Governor Claudio Castro called it the city’s biggest operation and urged more federal support.
