Huge raid on Rio gang leaves at least 64 people dead and 81 under arrest in Brazil

About 2,500 police and soldiers stormed Rio de Janeiro’s Complexo de Alemao and Penha on Tuesday, targeting the Red Command in one of Brazil’s most violent raids in recent history. Authorities said at least 60 suspects and four officers were killed, 81 people were arrested, and 93 rifles plus more than half a ton of drugs were seized. With helicopters and armored vehicles in use, footage showed fire and smoke as gunfire rang out. The UN and human rights groups demanded investigations, while schools closed and buses were commandeered amid gang blockades.
