Lawyers for Luigi Mangione urged a Manhattan federal judge to dismiss counts, including the only charge that could bring the death penalty, and to bar his statements and a backpack with a gun and ammunition, saying he wasn’t read his rights and the search lacked a warrant. Mangione, 27, has pleaded not guilty in the Dec. 4 killing of UnitedHealthcare's chief executive Brian Thompson as he arrived at a Manhattan hotel for an investor conference. Arrested five days later in Altoona, Pennsylvania, he argues the federal firearms-murder count fails because the alleged predicate, stalking, isn’t a crime of violence.
