Los Angeles firefighters did not use thermal imaging technology to detect underground embers after a New Year’s Day fire, which later flared up to become one of the city’s most destructive infernos. The decision not to use the technology, which could have detected heat underground, is facing scrutiny. The fire, which was deliberately started, resulted in 12 deaths, destroyed over 6,800 structures, and charred 23,400 acres. A 29-year-old Uber driver has been charged with intentionally starting the fire. Fire agencies often use thermal imaging to detect lingering heat or hot spots in a fire.
