CANYON, Texas — Multiple wildfires across the Texas Panhandle have destroyed homes, collapsed a historic BNSF railway trestle bridge, forced mandatory evacuations, and shut down Palo Duro Canyon State Park after igniting on Thursday, May 14, 2026. The largest blaze, the Hunggate Fire, began around 4:30 p.m. in Randall County when dry lightning struck near Canyon, rapidly expanding to 7,000 acres with no containment and later merging with other fires. By early Saturday, it had grown to 17,300 acres and reached 40 percent containment, while the nearby Chocolate Chip Fire burned about 10,000 acres and was 50 percent contained. Rail service on BNSF’s Plainview Subdivision is currently suspended.
