Elon Musk has unveiled Terafab, a large-scale U.S.-based chip manufacturing initiative aimed at reducing dependence on overseas semiconductor foundries such as TSMC and Samsung. In partnership with Intel, Tesla and SpaceX plan to use Intel’s upcoming 14A process to produce custom AI chips for Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robots, future electric vehicles, and a planned space-based AI data center network. Musk says existing global chip production will not meet anticipated AI demand. The multi-billion-dollar project centers on a research fab at Tesla’s Giga Texas site in Austin and a SpaceX-led production facility, with procurement from major equipment suppliers already under way.
