A Cape Cod swimmer developed a Vibrio vulnificus infection, a rare bacteria that can cause a flesh-eating disease, after swimming with an open wound at Old Silver Beach in Falmouth. Massachusetts health officials issued a warning, noting that while the infection is uncommon, warmer waters increase the risk. Seven cases have been confirmed in Massachusetts in recent years. Officials advise avoiding coastal waters with open wounds or using waterproof bandages, washing wounds after water exposure, and avoiding raw seafood. The beach remains open.
