Inside the Battle Over ‘Napalm Girl’

A new documentary, "The Stringer," challenges the long-held belief that Nick Út took the iconic "Napalm Girl" photograph from the Vietnam War. Investigations by the documentary's filmmakers and World Press Photo suggest the photo was likely taken by a different photographer, Nguyễn Thành Nghệ, a freelancer who sold the image to the Associated Press. The AP's own investigation concluded it couldn't definitively prove Út took the photo, while World Press Photo removed Út's credit. The controversy highlights questions about memory, journalistic ethics, and the power dynamics within the Saigon press corps during the war.
