Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Africa's largest hydroelectric project. The dam, a source of tension with Egypt and Sudan who fear reduced Nile water flow, is intended to meet Ethiopia's energy needs. Abiy reassured neighbors, inviting them to the September inauguration, emphasizing shared progress. Egypt and Sudan previously expressed concerns about unilateral actions regarding the dam's operation. The dam, over a mile long and 145m high, is situated on the Blue Nile, the source of 85% of the Nile's water.
