Zaki, last year's runner-up, correctly spelled "éclaircissement" without asking any questions. The competition, which began with 243 spellers, saw multiple finalists misspell words in the late rounds. Zaki's victory earned him over $50,000 in cash and prizes. This year's bee marked the 110th champion due to past ties.
