Somalis rethink trade routes as Houthis disrupt established shipping channels

Somalia's business community is actively seeking alternative maritime shipping routes to bypass ongoing security threats and disruptions around the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Strait of Hormuz. Importers have traditionally relied on Gulf intermediaries such as the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Saudi Arabia to transport goods originating from Asian markets. However, recent escalations and Houthi activity have ended a long-standing ceasefire in Yemen, forcing port authorities in Mogadishu to forge direct trade partnerships. Mohamed Ali Nur, director of Mogadishu Seaport, reported that the port successfully handled a direct cargo ship carrying sugar from Sri Lanka for the first time. This strategic adjustment aims to mitigate rising shipping costs and severe delays caused by the regional conflict. Meanwhile, the renewed violence across Yemen has triggered a significant humanitarian crisis, driving thousands of displaced civilians to flee across the Gulf of Aden toward neighboring Djibouti.
