Ahead of Fed meeting, Trump says US should have world's lowest interest rate
PUBLISHED Sep 13, 2026, 4:40 PM ET
President Donald Trump asserted that the United States should maintain the lowest interest rates globally, regardless of economic indicators or inflation data, ahead of the Federal Reserve policy meeting. Speaking in Doonbeg, Ireland, Trump declined to state whether central bank policy makers would adjust borrowing costs during their upcoming session. The Federal Reserve scheduled its meeting shortly after the Labor Department reported that the Consumer Price Index recorded its largest increase in four months, reinforcing expectations of a rate hike. The central bank decision approaches as upcoming midterm elections threaten Republican congressional majorities, with inflation consistently depressing presidential approval ratings. Trump argued that higher domestic interest rates disproportionately enrich foreign nations despite the strength of American credit. While Trump previously criticized former Fed chair Jay Powell, current National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett noted the administration supports Federal Reserve leadership while acknowledging the president prefers lower borrowing costs.
