Bayers Monsanto unit appeared in a Missouri state court to seek approval for a proposed 7.25 billion dollar settlement resolving tens of thousands of United States lawsuits alleging that Roundup weedkiller causes cancer. Judge Timothy Boyer evaluated the framework during a St. Louis hearing, listening to objections from plaintiffs lawyers who argued clients deserved better terms alongside proponents supporting guaranteed compensation. The litigation has weighed heavily on Bayer since its 2018 acquisition of Monsanto, impacting share prices and creating ongoing corporate liabilities. Chief Executive Bill Anderson has prioritized resolving these claims under a broader turnaround strategy. While the settlement offers payouts ranging from 10000 dollars to 165000 dollars for non-Hodgkin lymphoma diagnoses, the court did not issue an immediate ruling. Bayer continues to deny liability, citing decades of safety studies and Environmental Protection Agency findings indicating glyphosate does not cause cancer under normal exposure conditions.
