Benin bets on turning its cotton crop into clothes at home

Benin is accelerating a national policy shift to process its abundant raw cotton locally rather than exporting unprocessed bales to foreign markets. According to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Benin stands as Africa’s top cotton producer, yielding 1.15 million bales during the 2025–2026 harvest season and accounting for 0.9% of total global production. Government directives now strongly discourage raw agricultural exports, prioritizing domestic manufacturing initiatives like the Glo-Djigbé Industrial Zone to foster value addition. Local entrepreneurs, including DAF Collection founder Fatoumata Dosso in Parakou, are leveraging "Made in Benin" branding to commercialize traditional textiles and finished garments. The initiative aims to capture high-margin supply chain value, reduce vulnerability to global commodity price volatility, and generate regional employment, particularly for women. While the strategy faces challenges regarding power infrastructure, capital investment, and international market competition, it highlights West Africa's broader effort toward industrial self-reliance.
