Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ makes it 6 weeks in a row at No. 1 as Hollywood wraps a banner summer

Sony’s superhero feature “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” remained the leading film in United States theaters over the weekend, securing its sixth consecutive week at the box office summit. The fourth standalone movie starring Tom Holland grossed $18 million domestically over the weekend, pushing its cumulative worldwide total to $2.4 billion. Universal Pictures’ epic “The Odyssey” maintained second place, adding $13 million domestically to reach $1.63 billion globally. Both blockbusters helped drive the domestic summer box office season through August 31 to an estimated $4.6 billion, marking a 26.1 percent increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, indie releases and rescued projects such as “Coyote vs. Acme” and the micro-budget dark comedy “Buddy” experienced strong holdover performances, whereas new wide releases like A24’s “Onslaught” underperformed commercially during the traditionally quiet Labor Day holiday frame across North American cinemas.
