Only solo woman in Venice festival says industry remains unequal

Danish filmmaker May el-Toukhy highlighted persistent structural inequalities within the global film industry during the Venice Film Festival. As the sole female director competing for the prestigious Golden Lion award among twenty-one fiction film contenders with her drama Woman Unknown, el-Toukhy addressed the severe scarcity of women directors at major cinematic showcases. Speaking at a press conference preceding her film premiere, she recounted facing a six-to-seven-year delay in securing financing for her debut feature film, noting that male peers advanced significantly faster. Festival director Alberto Barbera defended the official selection lineup, pointing out that women directed only twenty-four percent of submitted films this year, representing a decline from thirty percent in the previous year. Barbera emphasized that all festival selection decisions are based entirely on artistic merit rather than gender quotas.
