Raiders RB Ashton Jeanty (ankle) closer to return than 'some think'
PUBLISHED Sep 2, 2026, 12:08 AM ET
Las Vegas Raiders general manager John Spytek stated Tuesday that running back Ashton Jeanty is recovering faster than anticipated from an ankle injury, leaving open the possibility of his availability for the season opener against the Miami Dolphins. Jeanty, 22, sustained the injury during an indoor practice session on Aug. 23, 2026, where initial observers feared a severe setback. He sat out Tuesday’s practice as a precautionary measure during ongoing rehabilitation. If Jeanty is not cleared for play, rookie backup Mike Washington Jr., who recorded 168 rushing yards on 23 carries in the preseason, is expected to step into the primary running back role. Jeanty accumulated 975 rushing yards and five touchdowns as a rookie last season, making his recovery a critical factor for the Raiders’ offensive scheme. Front office officials opted not to place Jeanty on injured reserve, indicating confidence in a short-term recovery.
