Transfer deadline day sees Man City agree $169 million move for Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez

Manchester City agreed a £125 million ($169 million) fee with Chelsea for midfielder Enzo Fernández on Tuesday, matching the British transfer record set by Liverpool for Alexander Isak last year. The agreement was reached on transfer deadline day after negotiations between the Premier League clubs, with Fernández given permission to undergo a medical before completing the move. Reuters reported the deal based on British media reports, while The Guardian said the fee was fixed with no add-ons or performance clauses. Fernández, 25, joined Chelsea from Benfica for £106.8 million in January 2023, then a British record. His move reunites him with City manager Enzo Maresca, who previously coached him at Chelsea. City are rebuilding their midfield after several departures and had already signed Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi. The transfer remained subject to medical and administrative completion when reports emerged. The Premier League window closed at 11 p.m. local time.
