Leaders of China, Russia and India meeting to counter U.S. influence
PUBLISHED Sep 1, 2026, 9:57 AM ET
Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit to discuss regional cooperation and economic alignment. The ten-nation bloc functioned as a strategic platform to project alternative economic frameworks outside Western dominance. During bilateral sideline meetings, President Putin and Prime Minister Modi discussed bilateral ties, while Modi urged an immediate transition from war to peace concerning the conflict in Ukraine. China and Russia advanced initiatives to strengthen Eurasian integration and institutionalize multipolar governance models. India utilized its presence to maintain diplomatic balance among major geopolitical rivals while safeguarding regional security interests. Analysts noted that despite high-profile diplomatic optics, deep-seated territorial disputes between member states prevent the bloc from operating as a unified military alliance, limiting its current scope primarily to economic dialogue and strategic regional consultation.
