US pushes critical minerals agenda in Cook Islands with new Penrhyn port

The United States and New Zealand have agreed to co-fund a port development project on Penrhyn Atoll in the Cook Islands, committing fifty million dollars and ten million dollars respectively. Announced by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, the infrastructure initiative builds upon the Critical Minerals Framework signed earlier by Washington and the Cook Islands. The project aims to improve local maritime connectivity and safety while supporting strategic interests in accessing deep-sea mineral resources across the region. Officials noted that the upgraded facility will serve as a vital lifeline for the isolated northern atoll, enhancing logistical capabilities for both commercial and resource exploration activities. The funding reflects an ongoing effort by Western nations to strengthen diplomatic and economic partnerships in the Pacific amidst shifting regional dynamics.
