A structural failure in Pueblo, Colorado, caused approximately 4.25 million gallons of untreated raw sewage to discharge directly into the Arkansas River. The incident began on Wednesday, August 26, when a concrete patch inside a municipal stormwater discharge pipe ruptured under pressure. Plant operators detected the leak the following day and halted the flow by noon on Thursday, August 27. The wastewater entered a stormwater conduit flowing into the river near Confluence Park, prompting immediate multi-agency responses. State health and agricultural regulators issued urgent warnings to downstream farmers, ranchers, and produce growers relying on the waterway for irrigation and livestock. Local health officials collected downstream water samples for laboratory testing to evaluate bacterial contamination levels. Authorities advised the public to avoid all recreational water contact, including fishing and kayaking, across a multi-county stretch extending from Pueblo to Las Animas through August 31.
