Russian strike on Kyiv-area warehouse sparks detonation, killing 37

PUBLISHED Aug 29, 2026, 9:17 AM ET

A Russian drone strike on a warehouse in the Kyiv region killed at least 37 people and injured dozens more, triggering a massive fire and explosions that officials said were fueled by ammunition stored at the site. The attack late Friday in the village of Myla, Bucha district, also damaged about 50 residential buildings and an elderly care facility, forcing the evacuation of more than 370 residents. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the warehouse belonged to the Defense Forces and said investigators have opened criminal proceedings on charges of official negligence, noting that regulations prohibit ammunition storage near homes. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed it struck an ammunition depot storing drone components. The strike is the second such incident in two months, following a July attack in Vyshneve that killed nine. Kyiv has faced near-continuous drone and missile attacks for three days, with authorities struggling to intercept high-speed jet-powered drones.
