Europe’s summer drought threatens fish in rivers, lakes and farms

Europe’s severe summer drought is damaging fish populations and aquaculture businesses across central and southeastern Europe, as record-low river levels, extreme heat and scarce rainfall leave waterways warmer and oxygen-poor. In Serbia, fish are trapped in shrinking Danube side channels near Novi Sad, while water temperatures have exceeded 30 degrees Celsius, according to fishermen quoted by The Associated Press. Hungary has reported hundreds of tonnes of fish deaths at Rétimajor, while Czech fish farmers are reducing feeding and aerating ponds to limit oxygen stress. European Union drought monitoring shows critical conditions across much of the continent, including the Danube basin. The European Space Agency reported record-low Danube levels in Hungary and warned that rising temperatures and declining oxygen threaten fish. Authorities and farmers are using emergency pumping, aeration and water-management measures, but the episode is prompting wider debate over drought preparedness, water allocation and adaptation to increasingly severe climate extremes.
