Company Recalls Alfalfa After CDC Says 55 Sickened in Salmonella, E. Coli Outbreak

PUBLISHED Aug 23, 2026, 11:47 AM ET

Everything Sprouts has recalled specific alfalfa sprouts after federal health officials linked the products to a multistate outbreak of E. coli and Salmonella infections, according to the FDA and CDC. The agencies reported 55 illnesses across 15 states, including 46 E. coli cases, seven Salmonella cases and two people infected with both pathogens. Four people have been hospitalized, with no deaths reported. Illnesses began May 31 and continued through August 8. Investigators found that 26 of 34 interviewed patients reported eating alfalfa sprouts, while traceback evidence from restaurants and grocery stores identified sprouts distributed by Everything Sprouts of Minneapolis. The recall, announced August 22, covers specified lots of Everything Sprouts and Calco alfalfa sprouts and two sprout-mix products distributed through Minnesota and Wisconsin. FDA inspections and sample collection began August 19, and the investigation remains ongoing to determine contamination sources and whether additional products or firms are involved nationwide today.
