Sprouts Recall: Rare Double Outbreak Hits 15 States

PUBLISHED Aug 22, 2026, 12:06 PM ET

Health officials are investigating an outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli and Salmonella infections linked to alfalfa sprouts distributed by Minneapolis-based Everything Sprouts LLC. The CDC and FDA reported 55 illnesses across 15 states as of August 21, including 46 E. coli infections, seven Salmonella infections and two people infected with both. Four patients have been hospitalized and no deaths were reported. Illnesses began between May 31 and August 8. Of 34 people interviewed, 26, or 76%, reported eating alfalfa sprouts before becoming sick. Traceback information from restaurants and grocery stores identified Everything Sprouts’ alfalfa sprouts as a source of illnesses. FDA began inspecting and sampling the company’s facility on August 19 and is investigating contamination and additional products or firms. The sprouts were sold under Calco and Everything Sprouts brands. Everything Sprouts announced a voluntary recall on August 21, while saying testing found no positive laboratory results. Authorities continue investigating.
