Oregon Grasshopper Fire Forces Mandatory Community Evacuations

The Grasshopper Fire in Oregon’s Mount Hood National Forest has rapidly expanded to nearly 14,000 acres in under a week, prompting Level 3 “Go Now” evacuation orders for Sportsman Park, Pine Hollow and Wamic. As of Monday, local officials report the wildfire is 0% contained and spreading north toward the steep, hard-to-access Badger Creek Wilderness. More than 200 firefighters are concentrating on building a fire line to the southeast to protect nearby communities, while the Oregon State Fire Marshal conducts preventative work. About a dozen displaced residents are currently being sheltered by the Red Cross at Wasco High School in Maupin.
