Mooresville chemical spill at plant injures five workers

The incident released highly toxic chlorine gas inside the facility, triggering a hazardous materials emergency and causing severe breathing difficulties among employees. Emergency dispatchers initially received a call around 9:30 a.m. describing a medical emergency involving people struggling to breathe, but first responders quickly determined that a chemical release had occurred inside the plant. Five employees suffered injuries from toxic exposure and inhalation of chlorine gas, and emergency medical services treated them at the scene before transporting them to local healthcare facilities for further evaluation and treatment. Mooresville Fire-Rescue, the Mooresville Police Department, and Iredell County Emergency Services coordinated a large-scale response that drew multiple fire engines, specialized hazmat teams, and medical units to the site. Aerial footage from Chopper 9 Skyzoom showed the manufacturing plant surrounded by emergency vehicles, with Charlotte Highway temporarily transformed into a hub of fire, police, and ambulance activity. Hazmat personnel in protective suits assessed the exterior of the building, established a decontamination zone, and worked to secure the area. Television crews observed responders hosing off at least one individual outside the facility in an effort to remove chemical residue from their skin and clothing and reduce the risk of further exposure.
