Washington report alleges Trump politicized US 250th plans

A Democratic staff report from the House Natural Resources Committee’s oversight and investigations subcommittee, released in Washington on Thursday, July 2, 2026, accuses President Donald Trump’s administration of orchestrating a “hostile takeover” of preparations for the United States’ 250th anniversary. The interim report, titled “From Vanity to Insanity: How the White House Cheated the American People Out of Their 250th Birthday,” alleges corruption, wire fraud and pay-to-play schemes. It says the Trump White House dismantled the nonpartisan framework of the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission and its nonprofit partner, the America250 Foundation, and instead built a partisan structure to benefit political allies, collect voter data and advance Christian nationalist themes, including via a new entity called Freedom 250.
