Washington report alleges Trump hijacked US semiquincentennial

Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee have issued an interim report alleging that former President Donald Trump and his administration orchestrated a "hostile takeover" of plans for the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations. The report, released on July 2, 2026, said the White House sought to sideline the congressionally established, bipartisan U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission and its nonprofit arm, the America250 Foundation, by elevating a separate initiative called Freedom 250. Investigators allege Trump allies used a shell structure within the National Park Foundation to avoid transparency rules, install campaign operatives on its board, and solicit donations that donors believed were destined for the official, nonpartisan America250 effort.
