United States heat dome threatens July 4 holiday

A large and unusually strong heat dome has settled over the central and eastern United States ahead of the July 4 holiday, exposing more than 230 million people to dangerous temperatures, according to the National Weather Service. Meteorologists expect over 300 daily temperature records to be tied or broken by Saturday evening as an upper-level high-pressure ridge, three to four standard deviations above normal, traps hot, humid air from the Midwest and Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast and Eastern Seaboard. Heat indices are forecast to reach 100 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit, with elevated nighttime lows raising serious public health concerns.
