RIFLE, Colorado — A fast-growing wildfire known as the Dry Creek Fire erupted south of Rifle in Garfield County on Tuesday afternoon, June 23, 2026, forcing urgent evacuations and destroying multiple structures as it burned through rugged terrain. First reported at about 3:20 p.m. as a structure fire in the 800 block of Gage Road, just south of the Garfield County Regional Airport and behind Colorado Mountain College, the incident quickly transitioned into a wind-driven wildland fire. Fueled by heavy pinyon-juniper and oak brush and pushed by strong, shifting winds blowing to the east and southeast, the blaze rapidly expanded across the landscape and threatened nearby properties. By Tuesday evening, officials estimated the Dry Creek Fire had burned roughly 288 acres and confirmed that at least one home and one outbuilding were destroyed. In response to the fire’s rapid spread and proximity to homes and businesses, the Garfield County Emergency Communications Authority issued mandatory Level 3 “Go” evacuation orders for residents and commercial properties north of Mile Marker 1 on Gage Road, north of Gage Road on Grass Mesa Road, and along Sunset Lane. Authorities also announced pre-evacuation “Set” warnings for parts of the Grass Mesa subdivision south of Rodeo Drive and Coyote Trail, advising residents to prepare for possible immediate displacement as firefighters worked to contain the incident and protect surrounding communities and infrastructure.
