UNITED STATES – A large, multi-day severe weather outbreak is underway across central and eastern parts of the country, bringing a combination of flash flooding, tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail to millions of residents through at least Tuesday, June 23, 2026. The National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center has issued a Moderate Risk, Level 3 of 4, for excessive rainfall over southeastern Nebraska, northeastern Kansas, and northwestern Missouri, where forecasters expect scattered to widespread flash flooding. A broader Slight Risk zone for heavy rain stretches across much of the central Plains and the Middle and Lower Missouri Valley as the storm system tracks east from the Rocky Mountain region across the High Plains. UNITED STATES – Meteorologists warn that already saturated soils and elevated levels on major rivers, including the Illinois, Wabash, and Mississippi, mean additional rainfall will quickly run off, raising the threat of urban drainage failures, fast-rising rivers, and dangerous road flooding. “Training” thunderstorms repeatedly passing over the same areas are the primary driver of the flash flood risk, while the Storm Prediction Center monitors severe storms capable of very large hail, straight-line wind gusts, and isolated tornadoes. The multi-day pattern is expected to send additional rounds of storms from the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys toward the Appalachians, mid-Atlantic, and portions of the Northeast, prompting authorities in Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri to remain on alert for flash flood emergencies and urging residents to follow official warnings and avoid flooded roadways.
