CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — On Tuesday officials reported two separate fires in Clay and Putnam counties merged into the Railroad Fire, which rapidly expanded along rail lines and nearby cleared land; initial local reports noted voluntary evacuations north of Bostwick and a shelter opened at the Bostwick Community Center. This week agencies including the Florida Forest Service and Clay County Fire Rescue increased response with three large tankers, two scoopers, ground crews and firebreaks, raising containment from roughly 10% to about 55% by Wednesday; officials warned of prolonged high fire activity amid statewide drought and issued air-quality and road-closure advisories.
