Supreme Court strikes down Trump tariffs in major setback for economic agenda

Washington — The Supreme Court on Friday struck down President Trump’s attempt to use the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose sweeping tariffs on nearly every country, upholding lower court rulings and delivering a sharp setback to a signature economic policy. The case is the first in which the court evaluated the legal merits of a second term policy and is the president’s most significant loss so far. While curbing use of IEEPA for duties, the ruling leaves other trade tools intact; Trump has already used separate laws to levy tariffs on copper, steel, aluminum and other goods.
