First human case of New World screwworm parasite confirmed in US

The first US human case of New World screwworm (NWS) myiasis, a flesh-eating parasitic infestation caused by fly larvae, has been confirmed. The patient recently returned from El Salvador, where an outbreak is occurring. While the risk to the US public is considered low, NWS usually affects livestock and can cause severe economic damage. The CDC and other agencies are monitoring the situation and working to prevent further spread. Humans with open wounds are at higher risk, particularly in areas with livestock.
