Record-Breaking Black Hole Merger Detected

The LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA collaboration announced the detection of GW231123, a gravitational wave signal from the merger of two black holes, creating a black hole 225 times the mass of our Sun. This is the most massive black hole merger ever observed. The discovery was presented at the Edoardo Amaldi Conference. The collaboration uses laser interferometry to detect gravitational waves from cosmic events like black hole and neutron star mergers. This latest detection adds to their numerous discoveries since 2015, including mixed mergers and a potential 'mass gap' object.
