Yellowstone Magma Chamber Imaged: No Imminent Eruption Risk

Read, Watch or Listen

Scientists used a novel tomography technique, similar to medical CT scans, to create high-resolution images of Yellowstone's magma chamber. Employing 650 seismometers and artificial seismic waves, they discovered the chamber's top is 3.8 kilometers below the surface, containing a 50/50 mix of gases and liquids. This degassing process indicates Yellowstone's volcano poses no immediate eruption risk, as molten material is only 7-15%. The research offers valuable insights into volcanic systems globally, enhancing hazard assessment.
