WASHINGTON — Apple said Monday that John Ternus, the company’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, will succeed Tim Cook as CEO on Sept. 1. Cook will assume the role of executive chairman. Ternus will join Apple’s board when he becomes chief and will be the company’s eighth CEO. Arthur Levinson, the company’s non-executive chairman, will become the lead independent director the same day. Cook will continue as CEO through the summer to work closely with Ternus on a smooth transition.

This marks the first CEO transition at Apple since Cook succeeded the late Steve Jobs in 2011. Cook said, "It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple and to have been trusted to lead such an extraordinary company," and reflected on his gratitude for Apple teams. During his almost 15-year tenure, he oversaw the company’s expansion into wearable technology, including the Apple Watch, AirPods and the Vision Pro. Ternus has worked at Apple for about half his life, joining four years after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, and has overseen the hardware engineering teams for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and Vision Pro.

SAN ANTONIO — Victor Wembanyama led the San Antonio Spurs with a 35-point performance Sunday as the team secured its first playoff victory, capped by an alley-oop from De'Aaron Fox; on Tuesday Wembanyama exited the next game after striking his jaw on a fall and was diagnosed with a concussion, entering the NBA's concussion protocol.

San Antonio lost the Tuesday game 106-103 as the Portland Trail Blazers rallied, with Scoot Henderson scoring 31 points to even the series; coach Mitch Johnson confirmed Wembanyama's concussion and the league's protocol requires at least 48 hours of rest plus neurological testing before clearance, leaving the Spurs' availability uncertain for upcoming games.

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department issued subpoenas this week for several witnesses to appear before a federal grand jury in Washington as part of an investigation into former CIA Director John Brennan, and then, according to later reporting, withdrew some subpoenas and requested voluntary interviews instead. The subpoenas were reported Monday, and the withdrawal was reported Tuesday.

This week a Florida-based career prosecutor who had helped lead the inquiry left the case after expressing doubts about the legal viability of prosecution, and a former Justice Department lawyer was sworn in as a special counselor expected to assist the attorney general. The investigation, described as months-old and one of several probes into perceived Trump adversaries, remains active as investigators pivot their approach.

Minneapolis. The Minnesota Twins placed right-hander Mick Abel on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation on Monday, a move the team said was made retroactive to Friday; Abel, 24, is 1-2 with a 3.98 ERA in four games and had a seven-inning, 10-strikeout start in a 6-0 win over Boston on Tuesday night.

The Twins said they will make a corresponding roster move before Tuesday night's game at the New York Mets; Abel was acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies at last year's trade deadline for Jhoan Duran, and the placement removes him from short-term availability while team medical staff assess inflammation and the club adjusts its rotation this week.

Winston-Salem, N.C. — Monday morning a planned fight between juveniles at Leinbach Park near Jefferson Middle School escalated into gunfire, leaving two teenage boys dead and multiple others wounded. Police said the confrontation began when two juveniles agreed to meet around 10 a.m., and a firearm discharge produced several victims at the scene.

Officials, including Assistant Chief Jason Swaim and Chief William Penn, said no arrests had been made Tuesday and that investigators from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are determining individuals' roles and whether those injured were suspects, victims, or witnesses; schools nearby were reported secure and parents could pick up students.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. Patrick Mahomes attended the start of the Kansas City Chiefs' voluntary offseason program on Monday as he continues rehabilitation from torn ACL and LCL ligaments suffered Dec. 14. He underwent surgery with orthopedist Dr. Dan Cooper and has been working on rehabilitation in Kansas City this offseason.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Monday the team will 'play it by ear' regarding Mahomes' return and noted Mahomes is 'doing great' while remaining cautious. Mahomes has stated his goal is to play Week 1. The first two-week voluntary offseason phase focuses on strength, conditioning, meetings and rehab; the team also acquired Justin Fields earlier this offseason as experienced insurance.

Los Angeles. Los Angeles prosecutors charged 21-year-old musician David Burke, known as D4vd, with first-degree murder on Monday after authorities linked the death of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez to the singer. Prosecutors say Hernandez was last seen at Burke's Hollywood home in April 2025 and that her decomposed, dismembered remains were later found in a Tesla tied to him.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced charges that include special circumstances such as lying in wait, committing a crime for financial gain and murdering a witness; prosecutors also charged Burke with lewd acts involving a minor and mutilation of human remains. Burke was arrested late Thursday in Hollywood and is scheduled for arraignment while prosecutors decide whether to seek enhanced penalties, including possible death‑penalty eligibility.

Atlanta. A 26-year-old U.S. Navy veteran, Olaolukitan Adon Abel, was charged by Georgia authorities after a series of early-morning shootings across Decatur, Brookhaven and Panthersville on April 13, which left multiple people wounded and at least two dead, officials said this week.

This week authorities said Tony Mathews, 49, died from injuries sustained on April 13 and prosecutors sought an additional murder charge against Abel; law enforcement also reported that the suspect was found unresponsive in his jail cell Tuesday night and later pronounced dead while officials conduct an internal review.

Boston. Marcel Hug of Switzerland won the men's wheelchair race at the 130th Boston Marathon on Monday, finishing in 1 hour, 16 minutes, 6 seconds to claim his ninth Boston wheelchair title and fourth consecutive win, while Eden Rainbow-Cooper of Britain won the women's wheelchair race in 1:30:51.

Boston organizers and athletes recorded official times and standings Monday, with Daniel Romanchuk placing second in 1:22:44 and Jetze Plat third in 1:24:13; Catherine Debrunner was second in the women's race in 1:32:59 and Tatyana McFadden third in 1:36:43. Reports noted Hug's early lead—13 seconds at three miles and 55 seconds at halfway.

Washington — FBI Director Kash Patel filed a defamation lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia this week, accusing The Atlantic of publishing false claims on April 17 that he engaged in excessive drinking and unexplained absences that impaired his duties. The complaint seeks $250 million and names reporter Sarah Fitzpatrick as a defendant.

The filing followed an Atlantic article citing multiple anonymous officials; the White House, Department of Justice and Mr. Patel denied its reporting. Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee asked Mr. Patel on Tuesday to complete an Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, and the suit will proceed through the federal courts as parties prepare legal filings and responses.
