Paramount’s cuts reached CBS News on Wednesday, canceling the streaming editions of CBS Mornings and CBS Evening News, overhauling CBS Saturday Morning, and shuttering the Johannesburg bureau. Nearly 100 CBS News staffers are affected, part of about 1,000 layoffs across Paramount following Skydance’s acquisition of Paramount Global, with another 1,000 expected. Inside the newsroom, one staffer described the mood as “depressed and unhappy” on a “very tough day.” The cuts predate Bari Weiss’s appointment as editor in chief. The future of Saturday co-hosts Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson is unclear.

Open enrollment for individual health plans begins Saturday in most states, amid a government shutdown and a congressional fight over extending enhanced tax credits. Premiums are expected to rise around 20% next year, and expiration of enhanced tax credits could more than double costs for some. Insurer rates may not change even if Congress restores aid before the window closes. A 90% federal cut to navigator funding will limit free help in many states. Enroll by Dec. 15 for Jan. 1 coverage, with most states closing Jan. 15; start at healthcare.gov and apply for tax credits first.

With eight Power 4 jobs already open and more likely coming, the article pairs 13 programs with “ideal” hires, noting splashy poaches haven’t aged well while many top teams are led by first-time head coaches. Proposed moves include Lane Kiffin to LSU; Eli Drinkwitz to Florida; Bob Chesney to Penn State; Alex Golesh to Auburn; Will Stein to Florida State; Jeff Monken to Wisconsin; Pat Fitzgerald to Michigan State; Dan Mullen to Ole Miss; Ryan Silverfield to Arkansas; James Franklin to Virginia Tech; Mike Norvell to Missouri; Jon Sumrall to Kentucky; and Eric Morris to UCLA.

Boeing reported a $5.3 billion third-quarter loss, largely from a charge tied to delaying the 777-9 to 2027, even as other metrics brightened: revenue topped $23 billion, production of the 737 Max increased, and free cash flow turned positive for the first time since 2023. Shares were little changed. CEO Kelly Ortberg said safety and quality efforts are taking hold, and the FAA restored some sign-off authority on Max and 787 jets in September.

After President Biden’s faltering debate, Representative Mikie Sherrill broke ranks on July 9, urging him to quit the race — a risky move that typifies her centrist bid for New Jersey governor. The Navy veteran touts “ruthless competence” and constituent work, but frustrates progressives who call her message milquetoast. In a tight contest with Jack Ciattarelli, a Trump-endorsed Republican, she foregrounds her military service and anti‑Trump stance while navigating controversies over her Naval Academy discipline and debate missteps. Allies praise her diligence in late-night markups; critics want clearer plans for New Jersey. She won the primary by 13 points.

Millions could lose November SNAP benefits as the USDA says it cannot cover $8 billion during the shutdown, even as Democrats argue contingency funds should be used. Separately, the administration will end automatic 540‑day work‑permit extensions, risking lapses for legal immigrants. Abroad, President Donald Trump was feted in South Korea with gold‑themed honors while pushing trade: Seoul outlined tariff cuts to 15% and staggered investments, and AWS pledged over $5 billion. Trump said he’ll meet Xi Jinping and not Kim Jong Un; he had a frosty moment with Canada’s leader, and JD Vance downplayed 2028 rivalry talk.

Utah officials plan a 16-acre campus on Salt Lake City’s outskirts that could hold up to 1,300 homeless people for addiction and mental health treatment, much of it involuntary. Gov. Spencer Cox supports the plan, aligned with a Trump executive order on camping bans; it includes an 'accountability center' and civil commitments. Critics warn of civil-liberties risks, inadequate staffing and financing, and a remote site with limited transit, likening it to a prison or warehouse. Costs are estimated at $75 million to build and $34 million annually, with many details unsettled ahead of a 2027 opening.

Donald Trump moved to shut down speculation about a 2028 run, telling reporters en route to South Korea that the 22nd Amendment makes another bid off-limits despite his “best polling numbers for any president in many years.” Earlier, he had left the door open but rejected a vice-presidential workaround as “too cute” and “wouldn’t be right.” House Speaker Mike Johnson said he doesn’t see a path to amending the Constitution, noting it can take about a decade. The 22nd bars third terms, while the 12th complicates any VP route, despite theories circulating in Trump’s orbit.

The Lions agreed to a four-year extension with Aidan Hutchinson, his agent Mike McCartney announced Wednesday. Multiple initial reports value it at $180 million with $141 million guaranteed. The 2022 No. 2 pick has surged after a season-ending leg fracture just over a year ago, posting 6.0 sacks, six tackles for loss, 13 quarterback hits, and a league-leading four forced fumbles in seven games, with sacks in five straight. Detroit, under Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell, has also extended Amon‑Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell. After a Week 8 bye, they host the Vikings on Sunday.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has hired Michele Beckwith as a deputy legal affairs secretary after she was fired as acting U.S. attorney in Sacramento. After defending her on X with a post warning, 'DEMOCRACY IS ON THE BRINK!', a spokeswoman praised her experience, saying, 'Trump’s loss is California’s gain.' Beckwith was dismissed less than six hours after telling Border Patrol chief Gregory Bovino that a planned operation must follow court orders and the Constitution; two days later, agents raided a Home Depot lot in Sacramento. The White House referred questions to the Justice Department, which declined to comment.
