Sudan’s army has pulled out of El Fasher after months of siege, conceding its last major foothold in Darfur to the Rapid Support Forces. Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said the withdrawal aimed to spare civilians as the R.S.F., which says it seized the army headquarters, tightens control over all of Darfur. The siege since April 2024 has driven famine, emptied a camp of about 500,000 displaced people, and pummeled hospitals and homes. Aid groups report thousands fleeing, while the U.N. cites reports of atrocities and executions and warns of mounting, ethnically motivated violence; the African Union voiced deep concern.
