About 2,500 police and soldiers stormed Rio de Janeiro’s Complexo de Alemao and Penha favelas on Tuesday in a yearlong probe into the Red Command, arresting 81 suspects and seizing 93 rifles and more than half a ton of drugs. Authorities said at least 60 suspects and four officers were killed in what Gov. Claudio Castro called the city’s largest such raid. The UN and rights groups urged investigations. Gun battles shuttered 46 schools, at least 70 buses were commandeered for blockades, and federal officials met and requested an emergency meeting amid political recriminations.
