Mississippi woman kills escaped monkey fearing for her children’s safety

One of the monkeys that escaped after a truck overturned in Mississippi was shot and killed by a homeowner near Heidelberg, who said she feared for her children after disease warnings. Jessica Bond Ferguson said she stepped outside, spotted the animal 60 feet away, and fired twice. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office confirmed a homeowner found a monkey on their property, and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks took possession. The Rhesus monkeys had been housed at Tulane University’s National Biomedical Research Center. Tulane said the animals were not the university’s and were not transported by it.
