French authorities may catch the Louvre jewel thieves but likely won’t recover the treasures, criminologist Alain Bauer told CBS News after Sunday’s daylight heist amid tourists. DNA was left behind, along with a crane lift, saw, gloves, a walkie-talkie and gasoline; the crown of Empress Eugénie remained as the robbers fled on motorcycles. The gang cut a back window and headed straight to Galerie d’Apollon, seizing tiaras, necklaces, a brooch and earrings. The theft, echoing the 1911 Mona Lisa theft, exposed security gaps as Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said France had failed to protect its treasures.
